What is Anal Fistula?
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel or passage that develops between the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It usually occurs as a result of an infection near the anus that leads to an abscess (collection of pus). When the abscess drains, it may leave behind a small tunnel connecting the infected gland to the skin surface.
What Are The Causes Of Anal Fistula?
Anal fistula usually develops after an anal abscess. Other causes include:
- Infection of anal glands
- Previous anal abscess
- Crohn’s disease
- Tuberculosis
- Trauma or injury to the anal region
- Previous anorectal surgery
- Radiation therapy
- Sexually transmitted infections
What are the Symptoms & Signs of Anal Fistula?
- Persistent pain and swelling around the anus
- Pus or foul-smelling discharge from an opening near the anus
- Bleeding from the anal region
- Skin irritation around the anus
- Pain while sitting or passing stool
- Recurrent anal abscesses
- Fever in case of ongoing infection
How Is The Condition Diagnosed?
Anal fistula is diagnosed through a detailed clinical examination by the doctor. The external opening of the fistula is often visible around the anus. To determine the exact course of the fistula tract, additional investigations such as Anoscopy, MRI Fistulogram, Endoanal Ultrasound, or CT Scan may be recommended.
At Goyal Piles Laser Centre, advanced diagnostic techniques are used to accurately identify the fistula tract and provide the most effective laser treatment.
Laser Treatment For Piles
Laser treatment is a modern, minimally invasive option for piles that uses focused laser energy to shrink hemorrhoids without cutting tissue. It offers faster recovery, less pain, and a lower risk of bleeding compared to older surgical methods.
- Advanced painless procedure.
- No major cuts or stitches.
- Fast recovery with minimal hospital stay.
- Minimal bleeding due to precise laser technology.
- Patients can usually resume normal activities within 1–3 days.
- Reduced post-procedure care and greater convenience for patients.
Old Conventional Treatment
- Injection therapy (sclerotherapy) uses chemicals to shrink hemorrhoids.
- Band ligation places a rubber band to cut off blood supply.
- These treatments may require rest for 15–20 days in some cases.
- Higher chances of post-operative bleeding and wound care requirements.
- Regular wound dressing and post-surgical care may be needed.
- Patients often need a longer period before returning to work.
- Older surgical approaches can involve more discomfort and a longer healing period.
Difference between IRC and Laser Treatment
| Laser surgery | Normal surgery |
|---|---|
| Painless procedure | Painful procedure |
| Minimum or zero bleeding | Heavy blood loss |
| Day care procedure | 0 1-2 days bed rest required |
| Quick recovery | Takes time to recover |
| Minimum chance of recurrence | Chances of recurrence + |
