What is Anal Fistula?
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel or passage that develops between the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It usually occurs as a result of an infection near the anus that leads to an abscess (collection of pus). When the abscess drains, it may leave behind a small tunnel connecting the infected gland to the skin surface.
What Are The Causes Of Anal Fistula?
Anal fistula usually develops after an anal abscess. Other causes include:
- Infection of anal glands
- Previous anal abscess
- Crohn’s disease
- Tuberculosis
- Trauma or injury to the anal region
- Previous anorectal surgery
- Radiation therapy
- Sexually transmitted infections
What are the Symptoms & Signs of Anal Fistula?
- Persistent pain and swelling around the anus
- Pus or foul-smelling discharge from an opening near the anus
- Bleeding from the anal region
- Skin irritation around the anus
- Pain while sitting or passing stool
- Recurrent anal abscesses
- Fever in case of ongoing infection
How Is The Condition Diagnosed?
Anal fistula is diagnosed through a detailed clinical examination by the doctor. The external opening of the fistula is often visible around the anus. To determine the exact course of the fistula tract, additional investigations such as Anoscopy, MRI Fistulogram, Endoanal Ultrasound, or CT Scan may be recommended.
At Goyal Piles Laser Centre, advanced diagnostic techniques are used to accurately identify the fistula tract and provide the most effective laser treatment.
Treatment For Anal Fistula

- Surgical Treatment
- Laser Treatments of Anal Fissure
- Maintain proper anal hygiene
- Take a high-fiber diet
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid constipation and straining
- Take warm sitz baths regularly
- Antibiotics and medications may help control infection and reduce symptoms temporarily. However, medicines alone usually cannot cure an anal fistula completely because the fistula tract remains present.
- Fistulotomy is the traditional surgical treatment for anal fistula. The procedure involves opening the fistula tract to allow proper healing. Depending on the complexity of the fistula, procedures such as Seton Placement, Advancement Flap Surgery, or LIFT Procedure may also be recommended.
- Laser treatment of anal fistula is a modern minimally invasive procedure that closes the fistula tract using advanced laser energy without major cuts or stitches.
- The procedure is performed using a US FDA-approved diode laser system and usually takes around 20–30 minutes. Most patients are discharged on the same day.
- Laser treatment offers less pain, minimal bleeding, faster recovery, and a lower risk of complications compared to conventional surgery.
- At Goyal Piles and Laser Centre, experienced specialists provide advanced laser fistula treatment with excellent success rates and patient satisfaction.
